Living in Texas I have come to understand all about mud slinging politics. I thought I had it bad when I lived in New Hampshire, because let's face it, New Hampshire is one of the key indicator states along with Iowa and a few other caucuses that give the campaign a direction.
But I really have never seen anything like this.
The whole premise of this, if I were to go into politics is to spend your hard earned contribution dollars into formulating a strategy that will defame your opponent. Forget about what I would stand for, that doesn't matter. What matters is that my opponent looks way shittier than I do.
And you know what the real sad part about it is? That people buy into it.
I have asked a few of my neighbors to give me the low down about what they thing regarding some of the local elections here...like district representative or Magistrate or Sheriff. Either they did not know anything about it, or they would vote for this guy because the other guy is THIS (Insert negative connotation here).
Amazing.
No one could tell me what their candidate stood for. Or what aspects of their candidate appealed to them.
Is positive campaigning dead? What would happen if a candidate came out and said something like....
"I sincerely don't know about my opponent, and if you don't know his record then I suspect it has made the same impact with you as it did with me....now let me share with you my plans to strengthen these areas....."
Would people listen? Even if they disagreed and the candidate asked why in like a town hall meeting, would the people there walk away with a sense of, "Hey, this guy is willing to listen to me..."
That is the problem with Washington right now...Nobody is really listening. They are trying to come up with short term fixes for long term problems. No one has a real vision of what this country will look like 2 years from now or even 4 years from now. Big Business and Lobbyists are still pretty much running the country.
And because almost all of the political seats are very long term, with the exception of the Presidency, our government is letting them do what they want. The sense I get from listening to people is that people really believe that our government doesn't give a rats ass about us. What they care about is getting in and drawing the big fat pay check with their perky benefits.
I guess I have been aware of politics for lets say, since the end of the Nixon era when Ford took over....I have seen our country slowly go down hill from there. The story is pretty much the same. They promise you change and the world to get into office, but once there...it's more of the same old same old.
And it doesn't matter whether you are a democrat or a republican. It should be easy to see that no one party has the answers. It all depends on whether the politician is conservative on some view, and liberal on others. I guess, what I am trying to say is that it seems to me that we need a blend of both camps. And please don't say Bi-Partisan. That's bullshit right there. That would be a party member crossing the line on either camp in order to make enemies. No...What is needed is an American President with an American Congress who will do the will of the people. I think that when that happens everyone will prosper...including Big Business. The Fat cats will make their money because their employees will be aggressive and competitive.
I just look at the landscape of politics today and I wonder where this all went south...and more importantly, can it be fixed?
